WinAMP AAC/MP4 input plugin

Finally found an → input plugin ← for WinAMP that plays AAC files (.m4a) encoded by iTunes (local mirror).

As far as I know, this plugin doesn't play protected files from the iTunes Music Store - for that you'll need the M4P input plugin.

03-11-24: This version seems to allow tag editing without corrupting the files.

Clarification: The input plugin linked from this page is compiled by John Edwards, from the source code produced by Menno Bakker. There is another compile from the same source by Case here. The plugin is also found as an executable at AudioCoding.com and RareWares. For more information and sources, see the SourceForge project page.

Try to put your .dll-file in the plugin-folder of winamp (e.g. C:\Programs\Winamp\Plugins). Restart winamp and you might be happy. After finding this site, I have need only 30 sec. to use that plugin and play my mp4's.

Link updated.

When I try to use this DLL, I get "number of channels not supported for playback." This is with WinAmp 2.91. Anyone else seeing this?

I also tried downloading the in_mp4.dll binary from audiocoding.com, but I get a different error with that one... something about gain not being supported yet.

The weird thing is the in_mp4.dll I found on the site you are linking to was working with winamp fine on my laptop last week. Maybe because I have an older version of winamp installed there?

Posted by: Thomas on September 26, 2003 5:07 PM

Link updated again, to a local mirror of the file it used to point to.

I am really confused. I tried this DLL also, "gain control not supported yet," is what it says. Then I tried reinstalling WinAmp 2.91, no luck. Then I took that off and installed the same version of winamp that's on my laptop, 2.75 (which works on my laptop), and I get "number of channels not supported for playback" again. argh. :-(

Anyone else seeing the same thing? I have tried setting the output to both my soundblaster live card as well as the microsoft sound system 80 (usb speakers). Same result.

I've tried to install the plugin on winamp3, but I can't get it to work. Has anyone had any luck?

Posted by: Tremaine on September 29, 2003 9:14 AM

I'm struggling to get this to work in winamp3 as well.....any guidance will be gratefully received

Posted by: sven viskar on October 9, 2003 12:48 PM

I have no idea whether the plugin works with WinAMP3. It works fine with WinAMP2 though, just unzip it into the Plugins folder.

This the the Final Build of the AAC codec for Winamp. I have installed and tried it. Works great on all AAC files. The only thing, is that you can not edit the file tag info, like the genre and artist and stuff.

Can someone tell me how to rename the file to .mp4 or .m4a? I'm assuming I have to change the tag. By the way, It's a iTunes Protected file.

Thanks,

Lance

the plug-in works fine for me playing files ripped from my CDs via iTunes. It does not appear to play songs purchased via iTunes.

Posted by: Derk Gates on November 25, 2003 12:35 AM

For those using Winamp 5 beta (possibly other versions too?,) try going into preferences, and selecting the supported file types. This could make a difference

Posted by: Joey on November 30, 2003 5:28 PM

It works!! Thanks guys!
Can somebody tell me what programs can convert audio files to mp4? I know only one nero wave editor, and don't know if there is some better software for that. Can somebody help me out and send some sofware names and links?
Thank Guys

I got the 'Gain control' error
but only on samples over 64 kbs ?
and then only after I have played
them once ?!?!?!?

IE I downloaded a couple of songs
from :-
http://www.nealmorse.com/audio.asp
They play once the give the error ?

Posted by: Nobby on December 26, 2003 3:45 AM

NICE plugin.. been looking for this for a while now... hooah!

Don't try playbing with any of the id3-like tags...that'll corrupt your file ... and give you the error: "number of channels not supported for playback" ... which in my humble opinion is rather gay. Stuff this file format. Convert to non heathen file types ;) Handy plugin if you just want to play something however :) Two thumbs up.

I beleive the file extension .m4a works on pc... does on my pc using winamp 5 final (download it now on winamp.com).

Protected files from the iTunes Music Store can be played with this plugin:

Sweet! Now I don't need that kludgy player in Itunes! Now if they would just add EQ support and the fact that the protected Itunes plug-in won't play UNPROTECTED AAC seems rather odd. This is something Apple should support. They should have developed a plug-in of their own. They should have known many people wouldn't want to use Itunes to play songs.

To the people who can't get the plug-in to work with some files:

Try installing iTunes. If you don't have it installed, some files will not play in winamp regardless of the plugin used in winamp. iTunes is still required to authorize the file etc.

Yup, this plugin works flawlessly...thanks to whomever plucked this out of the sky and gave us all the ability to work around iTunes...briliant!
