US vs UK band popularity

A comparison of the most popular artists listened to by Audioscrobbler users from the US and the UK.

I should do this properly one day, it was an interesting analysis. It's strange to be reminded that people in the UK haven't heard so much of the biggest indie bands from the US, like Modest Mouse, The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, The Shins and Bright Eyes - though the UK does have Bloc Party and The Libertines instead.

Wow, that really does throw up some interesting stats - Belle and Sebastian rank in the States, but not here? Weird. Ditto for Metallica (but the other way 'round)

Belle and Sebastian were at #50 last week in the UK. For all we know they could be this week too...for some reason it's only a top 49 this week.

The position is like a chart rank, if 2 artists have the same number of listeners, they both hav the same rank. That explains why the last one is 49 - there are 2 artists sharing position 11 or 36. (the list is 50 artists long)

Yet another chart that proves people listen to crap, no matter what country they're in...

Hello visitors from StumbleUpon. Before you post a comment about how everyone you know has heard of these bands, please note that this graph was generated more than three years ago.

alf it may have been generated more than three years ago, but most english people I know, knew of the bands you claim we don't even back then !

this isnt and end all be all graph, just an observation when comparing uk and us bands on ONE(!) music service.

interesting comparison, thats all.

I live in New York City and I know mostly all those bands and they're pretty damn popular here if anything I haven't heard of a lot of the bands on the US chart

Posted by: BIlal on May 28, 2008 11:54 PM

To the guy above... this was in 2005... think back to that time.

Posted by: Danny on May 29, 2008 2:25 AM

Most people in the UK who like music know who Modest Mouse, The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, The Shins and Bright Eyes are.

In fact the shins, bright eyes and modest mouse all played one of the major music festivals in the UK last year.

Well, I know the US knows of System Of A Down.
I don't even know of some of the artists on the US chart...I know all but 2 on the UK.
I may be from Canada, but most of our music on the charts comes from the US.
I don't see how this chart is very accurate, to tell you the truth, because 3 years ago, almost all my friends were listening to SOAD.
I do believe also, that more "mainstream" music would be listened to about 3 years ago.

I'm aware that this is old, but in my experience, Brits have far better awareness of indie than Americans do.

Is there a reason that everyone assumes that because they or their friends have heard of or listen to a particular band this means the majority of people in their country do? The point of this graph, which, it has been pointed out, is 3 years old, is to compare the listening habits of ENTIRE COUNTRIES. If it helps, think of it as what the average citizen listens to.

Personally, I do feel that Brits have a better taste in music in general. Muse is way to far down the list in USA. Same goes for Queen. and including bands like Outkast is rather shoddy.

But then thats one mans opinion.

No offence guys, but does it really matter? It's all bloody good music!

Also interesting is the ratings of top live-concert bands, which can be very different (for one thing, no dead or non-touring artists matter).

the stats offered by sites like polstar and ticketmaster and billboard are of questionable origin though its unclear how they calculate.

gruvrs top bands worldwide is interesting
http://gruvr.com/top-bands/
also top concerts
http://gruvr.com/top-concerts/

bvery transparent what the stats are, Id love to see it broken down by EU vs US as in this post

That was pretty interesting it has to be said. Though I was glad to see that Blur were ahead of Oasis on the UK side of it :):):)

What did suprise me though was that I couldnt find ' Autorun ' in the top 50 of the UK :P

Can ya believe it like

Wait, we definitely have Bloc Party over here and TONS of people have heard of them. In fact, they're my favorite band and I'm from California.

system of a down and metallica and rage chart in UK but not in the US? what in gods name is happening!?

Posted by: Charles! on June 2, 2008 3:17 PM

Green Day is only at the top because this is over 3 years old, meaning, this is from the time American Idiot was released. Muse is siiickk though and are probably higher now in the states than back then

Posted by: jidas on June 3, 2008 12:46 AM

What's your source? Radio Head.... top for UK... don't think so!

Posted by: Dan on June 3, 2008 7:51 PM

That's a really interesting chart. Bands like Blur, Libertines, Bloc Party would always have it hard breaking the US, whereas Postal Service, Weezer, Dashboard Confessional? You'd get laughed at in the UK for listening to it.

I had to laugh at the blurb from the author - we in UK havent heard of blah blah blah but we do have the Libertines (now defunct) and Bloc Party

....errr well what about the 2 top bands listened to in the USA. Oh yeah they're from the UK!!!

UK music is the best, always has been and always will be. We innovate across the decades and our music lasts!!

Hi,

would be nice to see the origin of the various bands, to compare UK bands popularity VS US bands popularity in the two countries, but i think there are some bands neither from UK or US

Posted by: Lorenzo on June 5, 2008 2:06 PM

Muse 4th, not bad they're a great band

Posted by: Sean Cranfield on October 22, 2008 9:27 PM

i actually know loads of ppl here in the uk who are into bands like modest mouse, deathcab for cutie, belle and sebastien - one of our music teachers from school played with them a couple years ago! i dont think this sort of comparison works particularly well.

Posted by: James on March 10, 2009 6:38 AM
