Research from the University of California published in this month's Science shows that the normally rapid organisation of the mammalian primary auditory cortex is delayed by exposure to continuous white noise. Exposure to a pulsed pure-tone stimulus then allowed the cortex to reorganise, suggesting that noise may be a risk factor for abnormal child development.
