The OME development team today released version 2.2 of the Open Microscopy Environment - the first release to be aimed at end-users rather than developers. I haven't had a chance to try this full release yet (it seems best to dedicate a computer to it), but it should be ideal for storing and managing large amounts of microscopy image data.
